Interior Sized Prints

Interior Sized Prints are made for walls where balance matters, giving artists and collectors a format that sits comfortably in living rooms, passages, studies and reception areas. At Lithography Art in Woodstock, Cape Town, we print limited editions in sizes that are practical to hang, easy to frame, and suited to South African homes and offices.

Interior Sized Prints

Sized for daily living spaces, not just gallery walls

Interior Sized Prints are lithographs planned for spaces where people live and work every day. The format is usually large enough to hold detail and colour, but not so oversized that it dominates a room. That makes them a practical choice for apartments in Sea Point, family homes in Newlands, offices in Johannesburg, and collector homes in Durban where wall space needs to work around furniture, door swings and natural light.

Stone lithography is made directly from a prepared stone surface. The artist draws or marks the image on the stone, and each colour is printed separately where needed. The method allows for fine tonal work, line variation and a handmade surface that suits interior display very well. Because each impression is pulled by hand, the finished print has slight character differences that belong to the process, not a fault.

  • Suitable for living rooms, studies, passages and reception walls
  • Works well in both single-print hanging and grouped arrangements
  • Chosen for image clarity at a comfortable interior scale

Common sizes and edition formats

We work with sizes that make framing and placement straightforward. Interior sized editions are often planned around standard frame proportions so clients can source framing locally in Cape Town, Stellenbosch, Pretoria or Durban without difficulty. We also advise on borders and paper margins, since those affect how the work sits in the frame.

Limited edition printing means the number of finished impressions is set in advance. Once an edition is complete, the stone is no longer used for that edition. This helps maintain consistency and gives collectors a clear record of the work they own. Edition marks are usually written on the lower margin, together with the artist signature and title where required.

  • Square, portrait and landscape proportions available
  • Standard interior sizes for easy framing and hanging
  • Limited editions, with proof and edition planning discussed before printing starts
  • Numbering and signing completed in the edition process

Where these prints suit best

Interior Sized Prints suit spaces that need art with a finished presence but not a monumental footprint. In homes, they work above sideboards, in stair landings, over reading chairs and in dining areas. In offices and client-facing spaces, they fit waiting areas, boardrooms, private offices and meeting passages where a calmer scale is often better than a very large work.

Cape Town coastal air can be damp and Johannesburg interiors can be dry, so the right framing and placement matter. We recommend hanging prints away from direct sun, strong aircon flow and persistent moisture. In Durban and other coastal areas, good framing with archival mount board and sealed backing helps protect the paper over time. If the wall gets afternoon sun, a position with filtered light is better than a spot that takes direct glare.

  • Good for homes, studios, offices and client reception areas
  • Best placed out of direct sun and away from humidity hotspots
  • Useful where a print must fit around doors, windows or shelving

Display, light and framing

What these prints do need is sound framing, careful handling and a suitable wall. A clean, dry wall with proper fixings is usually enough. For heavier framed works, especially with glass, use wall plugs and hooks rated for the load. In older buildings and sectional title units, it is worth checking the wall type before hanging. Hollow partitions, plastered brick and concrete all need different fixings.

Lighting should be soft and even. Strong spotlights placed too close can create heat and glare on glass, while harsh sunlight can fade paper over time. If you are installing more than one print, allow enough space between frames so the eye can rest. Interior Sized Prints often look best when the top line sits at a comfortable viewing height, not too high on the wall.

  • Use suitable fixings for brick, concrete or partition walls
  • Allow even spacing for multi work groupings
  • Keep away from direct sunlight, steam and constant damp

Paper, framing and print care

Stone lithographs are paper works, so care starts with the paper choice and continues after framing. We help clients think through paper weight, surface texture and border size before printing. For collectors, archival paper and proper framing are the usual route. That means acid-free mount board, conservation glass or UV filtering glass where appropriate, and a backboard that keeps dust and moisture out.

Once framed, a print should be handled as little as possible. If unframed, keep it flat in a dry, clean place and never roll it tightly unless instructed to do so. Avoid touching the printed surface with bare hands, since oils can mark the paper. If the work is being moved between towns or to storage, archival packing matters. We prepare editions for transport across South Africa, including careful wrapping for long trips to Pretoria or Durban where temperature shifts can be an issue.

  • Choose archival paper and acid-free framing materials
  • Store flat, dry and out of direct light when unframed
  • Avoid touching the image surface
  • Use archival packing for transport and storage

Before you buy or commissioning

Before placing an order, measure the wall carefully and note the usable space after furniture, windows and skirting are taken into account. Check whether you want a single statement print or a pair of works that sit together. It also helps to decide if the print will be framed locally or coordinated through the studio. If the work is intended for a coastal home, a busy office corridor or a room with strong sun, mention that early so the paper and framing advice can match the conditions.

For editioned work, confirm the edition size, paper dimensions, image area and whether the artist signature will be included before framing. If you are collecting a print as a gift or for a new home, allow time for proofing, signing and packing. Interior Sized Prints are practical, but they still need exact information to sit well in a room. A few centimetres can change the balance a great deal.

  • Measure the wall and allow for frame size, not only image size
  • Confirm edition size, signature and paper dimensions
  • Decide whether the print will be framed locally or through us
  • Tell us about light, humidity and the room use before ordering

How we handle interior editions in the studio

At our Woodstock studio, the process begins with edition planning and proofing sessions so the final print suits the intended interior setting. Colour separation, stone preparation and paper consultation all influence how the finished work reads in a home or office. Some prints need a softer tonal range for a quiet room, while others benefit from stronger colour to anchor a larger wall.

We work with artists and collectors across Cape Town, Stellenbosch, Johannesburg, Pretoria and Durban, and the practical needs are often different from place to place. A print for a bright Newlands dining room may need a different framing note from one going into a shaded Sea Point apartment or a corporate space in Pretoria. The aim is always the same: a carefully made lithograph that sits well in the room and can be enjoyed for years.

If you are unsure about scale, send us the wall measurements and a note on where the print will hang. We will help you choose a format that feels settled, not forced.

Questions about prints and editions

What makes a stone lithograph different from a digital print?

A stone lithograph is printed from a prepared stone surface, with the image built through hand work on the stone and each colour printed separately where needed. The result has the character of a fine-art print made through direct pressure and careful editioning.

Can Interior Sized Prints be framed locally?

Yes. The sizes are chosen with standard framing in mind, so a local framer can usually work with the measurements. We also advise on borders, mount board and glazing if needed.

How should I care for the print after purchase?

Keep the work away from direct sunlight, damp and steam, and use archival framing where possible. Handle the paper as little as possible and store unframed works flat in a dry place.
